Not a fan of the double chin look? We’ve got just what you need to slim that neck down at Renew!
One of the incredible state-of-the-art services that we offer here at Renew is Kybella, which is an injection administered into the neck area to treat submental fat. We sat down with our very own Dr. Julie Shelley to talk about Kybella, what do expect during a treatment and its side effects.
JS: Kybella is an FDA-approved treatment for submental fat (which is more commonly referred to as a “double chin”). The treatment consists of a series of injections that are performed underneath the chin to permanently dissolve fat. In fact, many physicians also use Kybella to treat other small pockets of fat, such as between the thighs or around your armpits. (You know those bra rolls I’m talking about). Kybella is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring enzyme that dissolves fat. Once the fat cells are destroyed, these cells can no longer accumulate. This results in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin and an improved chin profile.
JS: During your consultation with us, one of our highly trained medical providers at Renew will perform a thorough medical assessment to ensure you are a good candidate, along with “before” photos, so you can measure your progress throughout your treatment course. Your provider will then mark and measure your treatment area, cleanse it, and start your Kybella injections. Depending on how much fullness you have and the number of vials you’ll need, you will get a series of quick injections in the area. Our providers at Renew will provide patients with ice so they are able to slightly numb the area before and during the injections to help with comfort levels. Note: While the injections can feel like small bee stings, the treatment is generally very tolerable for patients. We do offer Pro-Nox for our patients, which is a gas containing 50% oxygen and 50% nitrous oxide to help with any anxiety and discomfort during the procedure.
JS: Right after your appointment, you should be able to drive home or go to work. You should expect some swelling for about 3 days after the procedure, so we do not recommend getting Kybella injections in the weeks before a wedding or other big events. There is no activity limitation as you recover, but depending on your swelling and tenderness, you might want to avoid exercising until it’s more comfortable. It is safe to take anti-inflammatories such as Tylenol for any discomfort.
JS: Yes! Your medical provider at Renew will perform a thorough medical history and physical examination to ensure you are a good candidate for Kybella to minimize any risks associated with the procedure, and the FDA has found no long-term side effects of using Kybella to treat a double chin.
JS: Kybella works over the course of six to eight weeks. We recommend that patients follow up eight weeks after their treatment to determine if they could benefit from additional treatments. Most patients will need between two to four treatments. The good news is that once the fat cells are gone, they’re gone! We recommend patients try to remain at a steady weight and strive to maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen, but once you’ve achieved your desired results, you shouldn’t need more treatments unless you notice weight gain after treatments are complete.
