The Moxi Process
What to Expect
Consultation
Your Renew provider will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan to meet your skin health goals. Typically, they will recommend the number of treatments, discuss the timing necessary to achieve your goals, and provide pre and post-treatment instructions. Photos are usually taken before treatment and post-healing.
Sit Back and Relax
Depending on the goals you’ve discussed with your provider, a topical numbing cream may be applied to your skin 30-45 minutes before your Moxi treatment to keep you comfortable. During the treatment, as the provider glides the Moxi laser across the skin, you may feel a slight warming sensation, which means the laser is doing its job. Moxi creates micro-coagulation zones in the skin—the body naturally repairs these zones and replaces damaged cells with healthy, vibrant skin.
Next steps
Your post-care regimen is simple: Wear a physical sunscreen and stay out of the sun. You may wear makeup 24 hours after treatment. The day after Moxi, your skin may appear red, and, depending on your level of treatment, you may see the small micro dots called “mends” where the laser was applied. As the microzones heal, they will darken and feel rough. Between days 3 and 5, the mends will slough off, revealing new skin beneath.
Pre-Care Instructions:
- Avoid sun exposure, either naturally or through the use of tanning beds (including self-tanning methods) for at least 4 weeks prior to your treatment. You must not have a tan at the time of your treatment.
- Protect the treatment area daily with a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.
- Avoid products containing retinol, Retin-A, glycolic acid, and alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) for at least one week prior to your treatment.
- Discontinue the use of aspirin, ibuprofen, and other anti-inflammatory or blood-thinning medications for at least 3 days. If you are taking these medications under the direction of a physician, you should consult with them before discontinuing.
- Tell your provider if you have been on Accutane or another product containing isotretinoin in the last year.
- Arrive with a clean treatment area (cleansed with no makeup, serums, or moisturizers).
- Shave if we are treating the face and you have facial hair.
- Tell your provider if you have a history of cold sores, as you may need to start antiviral therapy 2 days prior to treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Moxi treatments will I need?
This will depend on your treatment goals and the level of correction desired. Most patients receive 3 to 4 corrective Moxi treatments, then often elect for regular maintenance treatments. Talk to your Renew provider about your goals, and they can advise you on the best treatment plan.
How long does it take to see results after a Moxi treatment?
Results will vary depending on your treatment goals and the plan you set with your Renew provider. The day following your treatment, your skin may appear red, and, depending on your level of treatment, you may see the small micro dots called “mends” where the laser was applied. As the micro zones heal, they will darken and feel rough. Between days 3 and 5, the mends will slough off, revealing renewed skin beneath.
Is Moxi painful?
Moxi is a gentle and comfortable laser treatment that most patients find very tolerable. The numbing cream applied to the treatment area before the procedure minimizes discomfort.
What happens after an IPL photofacial treatment?
Immediately following the treatment you may experience some redness, similar to that of a sunburn, that should disappear after a few hours. There's no downtime, and you are free to resume your normal activities after treatment. IPL will pull tiny brown spots to the surface that will continue to darken. The spots will appear similar to coffee grinds and will be sloughed off the surface of the skin, revealing your beautiful new complexion.
Can darker skin tones have a Moxi treatment?
Yes, Moxi works beautifully on darker skin tones and is appropriate for all skin types. If you have specific questions or concerns based on your skin tone, ask your Renew provider.
