Ultrasound is a high frequency but low energy soundwave. When applied to tissue, the tissue absorbs the soundwaves, which causes the cells to vibrate. The vibrational energy stimulates cellular repair, which helps to expedite the healing process. The soundwaves, when absorbed into the tissues, are converted to heat energy. This helps to improve circulation.
Shockwave, on the other hand, sends higher-energy pulses when compared to the continuous lower-energy waves of therapeutic ultrasound. This makes shockwave superior to ultrasound for the treatment of ED. Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) or Gainswave machines are high-energy shockwave machines that are able to penetrate hard structures like plaques around the penis. The high-pressure waves also help promote healing. ESWT is not typically referred to as ultrasound although the technology does use sound waves.
