Shockwave Therapy FAQ

Common Questions about Shockwave Therapy

Low-intensity shock waves are applied to different areas of the penis. A topical numbing cream is applied to the penis prior to the treatment. Patients experience virtually no pain or discomfort. The shock waves stimulate the creation of new blood vessels in the penis and improve blood flow within the penis. This creates the ability to achieve an erection.
Gainswave is the premium brand of shockwave therapy that has the most widespread use.

Ultrasound is a high frequency but low energy soundwave. When applied to tissue, the tissue absorbs the soundwaves, which causes the cells to vibrate. The vibrational energy stimulates cellular repair, which helps to expedite the healing process. The soundwaves, when absorbed into the tissues, are converted to heat energy. This helps to improve circulation.

Shockwave, on the other hand, sends higher-energy pulses when compared to the continuous lower-energy waves of therapeutic ultrasound. This makes shockwave superior to ultrasound for the treatment of ED. Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) or Gainswave machines are high-energy shockwave machines that are able to penetrate hard structures like plaques around the penis. The high-pressure waves also help promote healing. ESWT is not typically referred to as ultrasound although the technology does use sound waves.

Most patients describe the feeling as small pulses against the skin.

Individual results will vary, however some studies have reported positive effects up to 1-2 years.

Yes. Shockwave Therapy can also treat Peyronie’s Disease, which is the development of scar tissue in the penis leading to a curved, painful erection.
Shockwave Therapy is recommended in a series of 6 sessions, 2 treatments per week for 6 weeks. At Renew, Shockwave Therapy costs $325 per treatment.

No. Medical devices with negligible capacities, such as those devices on the market for home use that mimic shockwave simply do not deliver adequate energy to address the root causes of ED. At Renew Wellness & Aesthetics, we use a STORZ shockwave machine, which is a “scheduled” FDA approved device. Scheduled devices can only be overseen and purchased by a medical professional.

For this reason, scheduled devices are much more effective in the treatment of ED than any home device.
A certain amount of energy is necessary to cause a biological response in the tissue of the penis, specifically the corpus cavernosum. There is a minimum amount of energy that is needed to encourage new blood formation to the area create healthy tissue, and treat ED.
