If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and noticed an extra bit of fat beneath your chin, rest assured that you’re not alone. One of the most common aesthetic concerns we hear from patients is the presence of this “double chin.”
Unfortunately, excess chin fat can affect more than just your outer appearance—it can impact how you feel about yourself. This isn’t just anecdotal; there are actually scientific studies that show the negative effects of submental fat (aka chin fat) on self-esteem and emotional well-being.
If you have a double chin that impacts your self-image, leading you to avoid photographs, buy high-neck clothing, or resort to other methods, it’s time to take action. Life is too short to hide behind scarves and turtlenecks!

Understanding the Cause of Your Double Chin
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for double chin removal. To figure out which treatment will be most effective for you, we first need to understand the cause of your concern.
Generally, there are three main factors that can contribute to the appearance of a double chin: excess fat, loose skin, and an under-defined jawline. Let’s dive deeper into each of these issues.
1. Excess Fat
When people think of a double chin, excess fat under the chin is often the first thing that comes to mind. This is a natural area for the body to store fat (even for individuals who maintain a healthy weight).
Submental fat is traditionally resistant to the effects of diet and exercise, making it extremely difficult to get rid of on your own. If you’ve tried to reduce chin fat with lifestyle changes, you probably know the frustration of seeing little to no results.
If you’re wondering why submental fat appears in the first place, that’s a great question. Unfortunately, there isn’t a clear-cut or straightforward answer because fat distribution in the body is influenced by many individual factors.
Oftentimes, the presence of this fat is simply genetic. If your parents and grandparents had fat deposits under their chin, you may be genetically predisposed to accumulate fat in this area too. Because our bodies are so complex, there are other factors that can influence submental fat, including:
- Weight gain
- Hormonal changes
2. Loose Skin
As we get older, the natural aging process leads to changes in our skin, particularly in collagen production. Collagen is an essential protein that keeps our skin tight and elastic. Unfortunately, collagen production decreases over time, leading to some significant consequences for our skin.
One of the most noticeable of these effects is the thinning and loosening of our skin. As we undergo these changes, it’s common for wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin to appear. The area around our neck and jawline is particularly susceptible to these changes.
When loose skin appears around the neck, many people call this a double chin or refer to it as a “turkey neck.” The turkey neck can develop due to several reasons, including:
- Natural aging and collagen loss
- Weight loss leading to excess skin
- Lifestyle factors (poor diet and exercise, sun exposure, smoking, etc.)
- Poor posture

3. Under-Defined Jawline
Sometimes double chins appear because of an under-defined jawline or chin. This is usually due to genetics and the natural structure of the jaw. For example, if your jaw is more rounded or set farther back, it can create a double chin (or accentuate the appearance of one).
Treatments for Double Chin Removal in OKC
Now that we’ve discussed the different factors that contribute to a double chin, we can further explore each of your treatment options. As you can imagine, someone with a double chin caused by excess submental fat will require a very different treatment than someone with a double chin caused by a naturally rounded jawline.
Kybella is our favorite treatment for patients with a double chin that results from excess chin fat. It is the first and only FDA-cleared, nonsurgical injectable treatment that eliminates excess fat in the chin.
How It Works
Kybella is made to mimic a naturally occurring molecule in the body called deoxycholic acid. This is an enzyme in our stomach that eats fat cells. When Kybella is strategically injected into the fat under your chin, it immediately goes to work.
Over time, your body will gradually eliminate the dead fat cells, and you’ll notice a reduction of fat in this area. When Kybella destroys these fat cells, they are completely gone forever, making it a great long-term solution.
What You Should Know
For the best results, most patients need a series of 2 to 4 treatments. After your injections, it’s normal to experience swelling. Swelling is actually a good thing because it means the treatment is working (although we know it can be a bothersome side effect).
Your provider may recommend putting ice on the area, but the good news is that this side effect is short-lived. Typically, swelling resolves within 3 to 5 days after treatment.
Opus Plasma is our favorite treatment for patients with a double chin that results from loose skin. This innovative resurfacing and neck skin tightening treatment can reduce the appearance of the dreaded “turkey neck.”
How It Works
Opus Plasma combines two powerful energies—plasma and radiofrequency. Plasma is an energy that creates microscopic injuries on the skin’s surface to stimulate the wound-healing process. At the same time, radiofrequency heat energy reaches deep layers of the skin to boost collagen production and tighten the skin.
Opus Plasma doesn’t stop at skin tightening. We also use this treatment to improve:
- Sun spots
- Stretch marks
- Uneven skin tone/texture
What You Should Know
Opus Plasma is unique because it requires less downtime than other laser resurfacing options. While you can expect mild redness and swelling in the 2 days following treatment, side effects typically resolve quickly.
You can expect long-term results from treatments. With the right maintenance and skincare, you can enjoy the results of Opus Plasma for years to come!
Dermal fillers are our go-to treatment for patients with a double chin caused by an under-defined jawline. At Renew Wellness & Aesthetics, we offer a variety of fillers to meet your needs, including Restylane®, Juvederm®, and the RHA® Collection.
How It Works
Dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body. When we inject dermal fillers beneath the skin, we can add volume to the places that need a little boost. For patients with an under-defined jawline, we can strategically inject dermal filler to create a more sculpted and defined jawline.
What You Should Know
Dermal fillers are highly customizable and offer instant results. There is minimal to no downtime after dermal filler injections, but you may experience mild redness or swelling for 1 to 2 days after treatment.
You can expect your dermal filler to last 9 to 12 months, depending on the type of filler you receive and how your unique body responds to it.
If your double chin is the result of more than one issue (ex: loose skin and excess fat, or a poorly defined jawline and sagging skin), then multiple treatments may be right for you. It is safe to get any combination of the treatments described above, and we usually see better results when there is more than one type of treatment on board.
Wondering which treatment or treatment combination is right for you? For all patients, we recommend coming in for a consultation. Our experts treat aesthetic concerns every day—they know better than anyone which treatments work best for the specific issue that you’re experiencing.
If you want to reduce the appearance of a double chin, it all starts with a consultation. During the consultation, we will sit down with you to learn more about you, your medical history, and the unique needs of your skin. Based on your goals, we can recommend a treatment for double chin removal in OKC that will work best for you.
Our providers are open and honest about expectations for your treatment. If you have a concern that nonsurgical treatments won’t be able to solve, we will let you know. We want you to love your results, so we don’t recommend treatments that aren’t going to work for you.
If your concern is better suited for surgery, we can give you the names of trusted plastic surgeons in our area.
