Sarah Lowell-Oshman

Licensed aesthetician and one of only three oncology-trained and-certified aestheticians in the state of Oklahoma

Hello again from your Renew Aesthetician and Certified Medical Micropigmentologist, Sarah! I wanted to share this Lash Lift OKC Guide to highlight our lash lift and tint services offered at Renew. You may have heard of this service, thanks to its recent popularity on TikTok. (Shoutout to my 13 year-old cousin for keeping me in the loop there)! If you’ve been around the beauty industry long enough, you might even remember it being called a lash “perm.” Either way, this service has made its way back to service menus in spas and salons across the country in the last 5 years. And for good reason!

So what is a lash lift and tint? A lash lift and tint is great for several reasons. The reason it’s my pick for any type of eyelash enhancement service is because it uses your own natural lashes. Do you wear mascara daily? During this service, we’re basically replicating the look of a gorgeous mascara-coated and curled eyelashes.

How long does a Lash Lift last?

A lash lift and tint gives your eyes a much more open or “doe-eyed” appearance and lasts roughly 10 weeks. We can control the “lift” of the curl and give a very dramatic or very subtle look – the choice is yours! This service is wonderful for clients who have stubborn straight eyelashes, lashes that point straight down (like mine), or even clients who have unruly lashes that crisscross and never sit quite right.

Lash Lift OKC : What is a Lash Tint?

This Lash Guide OKC wouldn’t be complete without information on lash tint. This gives the lashes their mascara-coated look. As a true blondie, my light-colored lashes always look much fuller when I have them tinted, and it really helps to define my lash line as well. While I recommend doing these services as a pair, you can definitely do them as stand-alone services. As with any service I offer, your lash curl size and tint color are 100% customized to you and your beauty goals.

A Lash Extension alternative

This service is also a great alternative option for clients who love the look of lash extensions but not the upkeep or hassle of having them. I love that it gives your natural lashes a little break in having something glued on them 24/7. The lift serums I use are keratin-infused, which adds a nice healthy boost to anyone’s lashes. This service takes roughly an hour and only needs to be done every 8-10 weeks. It carries no downtime and is a nice excuse to come take a little cat nap during the day!

Latisse Lash Growth Serum

If in fact you are trying to take a break from lash extensions and feel like you might need a little boost, I recommend adding Latisse Lash Growth Serum to your routine as well! It’s an incredible FDA-approved eyelash growth serum (which can also be used on eyebrows). It helps to quickly and safely grow long and luscious lashes! I can always tell when a client has been faithfully using their eyelash serum because they have the longest and fullest lashes. Apply Latisse once daily to the lash line (or brow area) using the small brushes provided in your lash lift kit.

Overall, lash services are treatments that I love, and so do my clients! I hope you found this Lash Lift OKC Guide helpful. Giving your lashes a lift and tint is a great way to make a small change to your look without causing any damage to the natural lash. It’s also worth noting that while we are all wearing masks, the eyes are the new focal point of our face, so let’s make them pop. Learn more about all of our lash and brow services. I can’t wait to see you in for your lash lift and tint soon!

XOXO, Sarah

Shock wave therapy for ED is available at Renew.  Erectile dysfunction, also known as ED or impotence, is a concern for millions of men around the world. Over 50% of men will experience some type of ED in their lifetime. The prevalence increases with age. This frustrating and life-altering sexual dysfunction is treatable.

Shock Wave Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction

The good news is that erectile dysfunction (ED) is treatable. Depending on the cause of the condition, several possible options are available, including Shock Wave Therapy, Platelet-Rich Plasma injections, and medication. Renew proudly offers shock wave therapy for ED. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is a relatively new and innovative treatment. This clinically-proven method treats various medical conditions.

What is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common sexual disorder among men. Men affected by ED have consistent trouble achieving and maintaining an erection that is firm enough to have sexual intercourse, despite being sexually stimulated. The condition can have both physical and psychological causes.

One of the major causes of ED is restricted blood flow to the penis, which means that the amount of blood in the penis may not be enough to cause an erection. This type of ED is called vascular erectile dysfunction. Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy is a clinically- proven and evidence-based treatment option for this type of ED. It also treats Peyronie’s Disease, which is the development of scar tissue in the penis leading to a curved, painful erection.

What is Shock Wave Therapy?

Shock Wave Therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT), involves audible, high-energy sound waves. Short pulses of focused shock waves are directed at the penis at a very low intensity to improve erectile dysfunction. It consists of several sessions and can be repeated if necessary.

How effective is Shock Wave Therapy?

Shock waves successfully treat various medical conditions and have since the 1980’s. In orthopedics, shock waves treat painful insertional tendinopathies such as plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis. In addition, shock waves treat non-healing bone fractures. In urology, shock waves break up kidney stones, treat Peyronie’s Disease and treat erectile dysfunction caused by vascular compromise. Depending on the area of treatment, low-energy or high-energy shock waves are applied. Compared to surgery, Shock Wave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment option with virtually no risks or side effects. Recent studies show that Shock Wave Therapy significantly improves erectile dysfunction. In particular, improvements are seen when the cause is due to decreased blood flow to the penis or other vascular causes.

What to expect during Shock Wave Treatment?

In 2010, Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) was introduced to treat vascular erectile dysfunction. During treatment, low-intensity shock waves are applied to different areas of the penis. A topical numbing cream is applied to the penis prior to the treatment. Patients experience virtually no pain or discomfort. The shock waves stimulate the creation of new blood vessels in the penis and improve blood flow within the penis. This creates the ability to achieve an erection. Shock wave therapy feels like a vibration to the penis. In about 95% of patients, the treatment is relatively painless. At Renew Wellness & Aesthetics, our board- certified physician, Dr. Julie Shelley performs this simple and painless treatment. Six total treatments, twice weekly for 3 weeks is recommended. Moreover, many patients report a noticeable improvement of their ability to achieve an erection within a few weeks

Is Shock Wave Therapy for ED FDA approved?

Although Shock Wave Therapy has a long track record in medicine, its use for treating ED in the United States is relatively new. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) hasn’t approved this treatment specifically for ED. However, it is a low risk treatment that may have surprisingly good results and should be considered as a therapy in any erectile dysfunction treatment.

Can you exercise after Shock Wave Therapy?

Yes, it is safe to exercise immediately after Shock Wave Therapy.

How much does Shock Wave Therapy for ED cost?

Shock Wave Therapy is recommended in a series of 6 sessions, 2 treatments per week for 6 weeks. At Renew Wellness & Aesthetics, Shock Wave Therapy costs $325 per individual treatment.

How do I know if Shock Wave Therapy is right for me?

Men who have struggled with erectile dysfunction and have not seen success from medications such as Viagra® or Cialis® should consider Shock Wave Therapy. It can be especially effective for men who are not experiencing adequate blood flow to the penis. These patients will see an improvement with Shock Wave Therapy due to the promotion of new blood vessel growth in and around the penis.

3D Areola Tattoo Services for Breast Cancer Survivors

Hello all! It’s Sarah here, Certified Aesthetician and licensed, medical Micropigmentologist at Renew. I’m so excited to let you know that we are now offering 3D areola tattoo services for breast cancer survivors! The month of October welcomes beautiful fall weather, but did you know it’s also National Breast Cancer Awareness Month? The statistics show that 1 in 8 women will battle some type of invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. This blog topic is all too real for so many people.

Paramedical Tattooing & Scar Camouflage

As many of you know, I am an Oncology-trained aesthetician, and in conjunction with that, I also obtained my license in Medical Micropigmentology (permanent makeup or cosmetic tattooing) here in the state of Oklahoma. While the overall goal in my career has always been to help women feel beautiful, I have also always known that there’s a much deeper meaning to truly making someone feel beautiful and whole again. That line of thinking is part of what led me to the Oncology Aesthetics Training. It pushed me to pursue micropigmentology. In the state of Oklahoma, you must hold an active medical micropigmentology license in order to do any kind of permanent makeup or any type of paramedical tattooing, such as 3D areola reconstruction tattoo or scar camouflage tattoo.

With that being said, I have recently completed the training and am now offering 3D areola restoration tattooing at Renew! There really are no words for how excited I am to be able to provide this service to women and men in Oklahoma. Areola restorative tattooing or nipple tattooing typically takes place after a person has had any type of breast reconstruction surgery, where the nipple and areola could not be spared. Surgeries like this might include radical mastectomy, breast reduction, implant removal or a breast lift.

Areola Reconstruction Tattoo after Breast Cancer

Providing patients who have been through a dramatic reconstruction a safe and empathetic environment to receive such a life-changing procedure is a top priority of mine as well as the rest of the team at Renew. After a traumatic journey like breast cancer or breast reconstruction, deciding to have a natural look fully restored to the breast area should be the easiest thing a client has to do. We strive to make that happen for each patient. While breast cancer is definitely the leading cause for needing a nipple and areola reconstruction, I also realize that there are so many other causes. I have made it my mission to serve any client that needs this procedure, regardless of cause.

Schedule Your Free Consultation for Areola Tattoo Services

Each appointment starts with a very in-depth consultation to help determine the patient’s overall goals for their 3D nipple tattoo. Size, shape, spacing and color are all taken into account for the final naturally looking results. If clients feel they need a “waiting period” or extra time to make these decisions, I am always more than happy to accommodate that. I will lend my professional opinion and guidance when necessary to ensure the best restoration a client can possibly get. I typically recommend for patients to bring along an audio book, podcast, or music they enjoy listening to during the procedure as this is a bit of a lengthy procedure. Of course, I am always up for a good chat session too!

To sum it up, I am so thrilled to have added this procedure to my growing service list at Renew and feel extremely passionate about being able to offer this service to clients. If you are a breast cancer survivor or someone you know is looking for an areola tattoo artist, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. We can chat about what options there might be to best serve you. I currently offer free nipple and areola tattoo consultations and am more than happy to talk you through any questions you might have!

With love,

*All prospective patients must be at least 6 months post any surgical procedure and provide written clearance from their surgeon, oncologist or otherwise involved team of physicians*

If your lips are thin, you may be considering having a cosmetic treatment to gain plumper, fuller looking lips. As we age, many people develop thinner looking lips as well as frown lines or unsightly wrinkles. Botox lip flip and lip filler both help to make your lips look fuller and more attractive. These procedures vary slightly, so it’s essential to carefully consider which treatment would be right for you before deciding.

Botox Lip Flip vs. Lip Filler

This article will look at the difference between lip flip and lip filler and will help you decide which treatment is right for you.

What’s the difference between Lip Flip and Lip Filler?

Lip filler, also known as dermal fillers, is similar to a lip flip as both these treatments will result in fuller-looking lips. There is, however, a big difference between the procedures. A lip flip treatment will make your lips appear fuller and plumper, whereas a lip filler actually makes the lips fuller. It depends on the results you are after which procedure you choose.

Botox Lip Filler OKC

During a lip filler treatment, the trained injector will inject hyaluronic acid filler into your lips to add volume. This substance will add structure to your lips, giving them a plumper, more hydrated appearance. Lip fillers can be injected into your top or bottom lip, or in some patients both, depending on the desired results. Our certified doctor or nurse injector will assess your lips to see how much filler to inject and where to put the injections.

Botox Lip Flip OKC

A lip flip is a very quick and straightforward procedure that takes about ten or fifteen minutes. During treatment, a small amount of neuromodulator such as Botox or Dysport will be used to relax the muscles in your lips. This will allow your upper lip to turn upward, making it appear fuller. In fact, your lip’s volume won’t be increased, the trained injector will use Botox to create the appearance of a plumper lip. A lip flip can be performed on your upper lip as the Botox is injected into the orbicularis oris muscle in the middle of your upper lip, known as the Cupid’s bow. You’ll also have Botox injections laterally toward the corners of your mouth. The lip flip can also be performed on the lower lip if desired.

The Benefits of Lip Filler

The main advantage of choosing a lip filler procedure is that it will instantly create plump, fuller lips that are attractive. Many people are amazed at how rapidly results are achieved with a filler treatment. The procedure takes just thirty minutes, and you’ll notice results straight away. Lip fillers are a fantastic way of enhancing your natural beauty. You’ll be able to look and feel great. Many patients report feeling more confident, self-assured, and positive about their appearance after having lip augmentation.

Lip fillers can help to improve self-esteem and can be life-changing. A lip filler treatment will allow you to preserve your lips’ moisture while constructing a soft, natural-looking structure and shape. The treatment will complement your natural look and skin tone. Lip fillers are a non-invasive procedure that allows the injector to have greater control over your lips’ shape and volume than in any other type of lip augmentation. You’ll be able to choose how full you want your lips to become.

Are Lip Fillers permanent?

Choosing a lip filler is a more permanent option than having a Botox lip flip. Fillers are long-lasting, and the results are likely to last about a year. Some people even notice a difference for up to eighteen months after treatment.

Are Lip Fillers safe?

Due to modern technological advances in the cosmetic industry, lip fillers are considered very safe. Hyaluronic acid lip fillers help create fuller, longer-lasting lips that look fantastic and can help improve your confidence. Many patients are worried about the side effects of lip fillers. Lip fillers are generally considered safe as they use hyaluronic acid injections. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the body. This means that the procedure is allergy-free and causes minimal bruising or swelling to the face and lips.

The Benefits of a Lip Flip procedure

Lip flips have a high success rate and are most suitable for people who are looking to achieve plumper, fuller lips without having filler injected. Many people feel that when they smile, their upper lip seems to disappear, or that they are showing too much gum when they smile, also known as a gummy smile. These problems can be rectified by injecting Botox into the lips and having a lip flip procedure.

How long does a Lip Flip last?

Lip flips aren’t permanent; the results are likely to last between eight to twelve weeks. Neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport are fast-acting substances that allow you to change the appearance of your lips quickly. After having a lip flip treatment, you should see results within the first few days and notice a continual improvement during a week after treatment. The full effect is likely to take between ten and fourteen days to occur. Small amounts of Botox are used during a lip flip, and for this reason, the results will disappear over time. When you notice that your lips are no longer as full as they once were, you can have an additional treatment if you want to maintain your results.

It was during her recovery from a serious sports injury in middle school that Dr. Julie Shelley found her life’s calling and led her to start Renew Wellness and Aesthetics in the heart of Nichols Hills to bring the help and hope she received to others.

The doctors who cared for her during that recovery process made such an impression that she was inspired to be a physician and help others with their physical ailments. But it was only after her residency and fellowship training that she decided her path.

“I was drawn to the way aesthetic medicine could build peoples’ confidence. I would see people leaving the office so much happier than when they walked in and with a boost of confidence they did not have before their treatment,” says Dr. Shelley. “ I loved my experience practicing Sports Medicine, but something kept drawing me toward aesthetic medicine.”

Her desire was to blend her unique sports background and aesthetic training to create something special to serve an even wider variety of needs.

Bringing Renewal to Others

Renew Wellness and Aesthetics is the unique medical spa Dr. Shelley wanted to bring to the community she loves. It’s a space where she and her team can treat both the aesthetic concerns as well as the physical and emotional health concerns of her patients.

They provide traditional medical spa services such as a full-menu of injectables, waxing and skincare services for both men and women as well as cutting-edge regenerative treatment options. This includes an extensive list of services that bring solutions for problems ranging from low-libido and related hormone imbalances to incontinence and hair loss.

“Renew brings such a personalized approach to medical care in the Nichols Hills area, “ says Dr. Shelley. “Our team does such a great job of making sure we know each of our patients on a personal level, and I think that allows us to create the best individualized treatment plan for each patient.”

She is proud of the care and excellent treatment Renew is able to bring to the Nichols Hills community and Oklahoma City area — and she attributes much of that success to her talented team.

“My team – which includes nurse injector Jessie Hammock RN, aesthetician and certified medical micropigmentologist Sarah Lowell-Oshman, and Patient Coordinator Taylor Grande – make coming to work a joy every day,” says Dr. Shelley. “My goal was to have a team that truly cared for patients, would always put patients first, and would always have a positive attitude no matter what the scenario. They have truly exceeded my expectations, and I don’t know what I would do without them.”

A Doctor on a Mission

Dr. Shelley is on a mission to improve the lives of her patients through the advancement of regenerative as well as aesthetic medicine.

“There is nothing like making an impact on someone’s life,” says, Dr. Shelley. “As a physician, to truly improve the way someone feels is so rewarding.”

She is a firm believer in self-care and encourages her patients to supplement their aesthetic treatments with healthy habits that improve their emotional and physical health.

“At Renew, we offer nutraceuticals, including Vitamin D supplements, Omega 3/Fish Oil, B Complex Vitamins, Iron supplements, Active Probiotic, DIM, and a sleep supplement with natural ingredients including melatonin, magnolia seed extract, and valerian.”

Sexual wellness is another area in which many of Renew’s patients are seeing real-life results. Dr. Shelley and her team are committed to creating a space for open conversation and comprehensive regenerative treatment options for both men and women. She and her team have undergone extensive training with the Intimate Wellness Institute™, which was co-founded by a renowned urogynecologist, to train and become certified in treatments to improve intimate health in both men and women.

The Natural Oklahoma Look

When it comes to aesthetics, the concern she and her team hear most often is, “I don’t want to look unnatural.”

“I like to let all of our patients know that at Renew, we are conservative with our treatment approach and always strive to create the most natural yet beautiful look for our patients,” says Dr. Shelley.

“That is one of the reasons why we trademarked ‘The Natural Oklahoma Look™,’ because each of our providers has the goal of creating the most beautiful version of yourself while still allowing you to look like yourself.”

Whether it’s helping her patients or enjoying the Nichols Hills community with her family — Dr. Shelley is excited to spend her life investing in the people she cares about in the place she loves most.

Sarah Lowell-Oshman

Licensed aesthetician and one of only three oncology-trained and-certified aestheticians in the state of Oklahoma

Are you there, followers? It’s me, Sarah, your Renew Aesthetician…

Does anyone else feel like it has been months since we last chatted? I hope you all have stayed well, and if you have not been back to visit us at Renew yet, we are ready and waiting! While we are all focusing on protecting our health right now, it occurred to me that maybe we’re letting some other areas of our self-care fall to the wayside. I wanted to write a QUICK blog talking a little bit about our favorite sunscreens, sun protection and summer skin care recovery — so here it goes!

The summer months are finally here and it’s time to celebrate! Trips to exotic places may be few and far between, but quick getaways to the lake or your favorite poolside are totally within reach. I personally love to be on a boat at the lake with my friends, which is where I spend most of my summer weekends. However, it seems like no matter how hard I try to avoid it, some area of my body comes home with a bit of a sunburn or some other less than glamorous “side effect” of a long weekend in the sun. We have a ton of great SPF options at Renew, so today I want to talk about MY personal faves.

First up are my two favorite sunscreens we carry here (see the complete offering list at the end).

I cannot go a day without the Total Defense and Repair Tinted SPF 34 from Skin Medica as part of my skin care routine. I am so picky about what a tinted moisturizer or SPF looks like on me, and this one fits the bill. It’s very light and not greasy and gives just enough coverage so that I can rock a natural summer glow look, or even layer a little powder over the top and transition it to a socially-distanced night on the town look. It also comes in non-tinted, which I love as well. A great perk of this SPF is that it also has blue light and infrared protection. For anyone wondering, blue light is the light emitted from our “screens” aka: cell phones, laptops, iPads, etc. Recent studies have found that blue light damage is just as aging and causes just as much damage as UVA/UVB rays. With all this increased screen time, it is best to protect your skin with this broad spectrum sunscreen that is appropriate for all skin types! Did I also mention that one of the key benefits of this moisturizer is that it reduces fine lines and wrinkles AND improves the appearance of damaged skin?? What more could you ask for?

EltaMD UV Spray & UV Sport

As a fair-skinned blondie, body sunscreens are super important for me! I love the Elta MD UV Spray and UV Sport! I use the spray on my body and the UV Sport on my face, ears, and along the part in my hair so my scalp does not get burned if I’m not wearing a hat. Honestly, anything from the Elta MD line is FAB but these are the two I find myself reaching for the most. I’ve also managed to hook my boyfriend on using the UV Sport! He tosses it in his golf bag and applies it once or twice during his golf game. He loves that he can apply this water-resistant sunscreen to his head (#baldisbeautiful) and his face without having to worry that the heat and humidity might get the best of him. This same thing makes it a kid-approved SPF too, no more stingy eyes at the pool!

Two of my other “can’t live without” summer skin care products are more of an after-sun product and help my skin to bounce back after some time in the sun or in the water. First up is Le Mieux’s Iso Cell Recovery Spray. I found this product several years ago when I first became an aesthetician, and it’s been my most coveted product ever since. As luck would have it, when I completed my Oncology Aesthetics training in Chicago, this product was one of the few that had been approved as oncology-safe and was recommended to treat skin that had been damaged by radiation or chemo. I love to use this spray pre- and post-sun exposure to help my skin balance and retain moisture. It feels like heaven on sunburned skin and has been proven to help it heal quicker than if you were to leave it untreated. I also love to use this spray on any scrapes, cuts, bug bites or any other unpleasant skin issue that comes by way. I also love the Moisture Infusion Sheet Mask by Le Mieux, and my sister-in-law is a fan as well. It gives your skin an instant refreshed feeling and hits the reset on your moisture levels.

I told you I would keep this short and sweet, so I’ll wrap it up with this…PROTECT YOUR SKIN! Great skin starts with great skincare, and great skincare should always include sunscreen. As promised, the complete list of our staff sun care picks is below but I do hope you enjoyed reading about a few of my personal favorites.

Until next time,

Sunburned Skin:
• ISO Cell Recovery Solution and ISO Cell Silver Gel from Le Mieux

Sun damaged/Melasma:
• Lytera 2.0 from SkinMedica
• Discoloration Defense and Metacell Renewal B from SkinCeuticals

• Moisture Infusion Sheet Mask by Le Mieux

Essential Defense Mineral SPF from SkinMedica

Outdoor Activities/Sports (great for men):

Licensed aesthetician and one of only three oncology-trained and-certified aestheticians in the state of Oklahoma

Hello, hello! Coming at you from my couch during this lovely quarantine (fingers crossed that by the time you’re reading this, we’re all back to “normal”). I figured with this time on my hands, why not write a few blogs over some of my favorite skin care products!? I’ll be the first to say it took me a while to get my digs in with the ZO by Obagi line. It was very new to me, but as soon as I started using it and seeing the changes in my clients’ skin, I was hooked! While I have several products from ZO that I absolutely love, I think my two favorites are the 10% Vitamin C and the Growth Factor Serum.

10% Vitamin C Self-Activating

Vitamin C products in the skincare industry are a time-tested favorite for many reasons. The top few reasons are its ability to lighten areas of pigmentation and its added benefit of some extra sun protection. ZO by Obagi’s Vitamin C is no stranger to those things! It helps to even out skin tone and provide overall clarity to your complexion. I personally struggle with a dull, uneven skin tone. I don’t necessarily have a ton of (visible) sun damage, but I feel like my skin constantly looks dull. I started using the 10% Vitamin C a few weeks ago and began to see a huge difference in the overall glow of my skin! After incorporating a Microneedling Treatment with PRP, my skin is finally on its way to being smooth and clear. It’s also worth noting that the texture of this product is amazing. To me it feels like a smooth, soft makeup primer, which makes it easy for me to layer on in the mornings. It also gets bonus points for its smell (hello fresh citrus)! I like this particular Vitamin C product over others because 1.) I feel like I can see a huge difference in my skin clarity sooner and 2.) The texture and scent seal the deal. In the past, I’ve used Vitamin C serums that have been really runny and honestly kind of stinky, and this is neither. It’s also worth noting that this product causes me ZERO breakouts!

Growth Factor Serum

Another favorite product of mine, and one that’s becoming sort of a “cult beauty favorite” among my clients, is the Growth Factor Serum from ZO by Obagi. This Growth Factor Serum is what I’m now calling filler in a jar. Its main purpose is to help “plump” back up fine lines and wrinkles. I love it because I’m not totally sure I want filler in my smile lines yet, but they do bother me, and this product is the perfect midway solution. I’m already noticing a difference in my “marionette lines” and under eye areas. To quote one of my clients “I’ll never not own this stuff…I want to bathe in it.” I can’t say I disagree with her! While not a replacement for filler, this product is a great building block to it. I also like to use it around existing filler I already have (my lips) to help protect my investment and keep any fine lines from making a surprise appearance. If your filler appointment is currently on hold thanks to COVID-19, I cannot recommend trying the anti aging ZO Growth Factor enough! As with the 10% Vitamin C from ZO, the smell and texture of this product alone is enough to get you hooked. In fact when I use it on facial clients, the first thing they comment on is how good it smells!

Wrinkle + Texture Repair and Daily Power Defense

Honorable mention from the ZO by Obagi line goes to: Wrinkle + Texture Repair and Daily Power Defense. I have also recently incorporated those into my skincare routine, and I am loving them. The Wrinkle and Texture is great for stubborn acne and rough texture, and the Daily Power Defense gives my fair skin an extra boost of sun protection as well as protection from the daily stressors of our environment.

All in all, this product line is amazing, and I’m so excited we decided to bring it on as one of our Physician-Grade skincare lines at Renew! If you’re looking for a way to change up your current skincare routine, I recommend adding in one of these products!

Renew has the perfect products and services to help you feel beautiful throughout your pregnancy.

Hey all! It’s your favorite aesthetician here at Renew, Sarah!

Just wanted to write a quick blog about some of my favorite pregnancy-safe products and treatments we offer at Renew. Taylor, our sweet Patient Services Coordinator, is expecting her first baby soon, and it seems like so many other friends and family of the staff here are expecting little ones as well. What better time to write a little something to focus on them? Treatments and safe skincare products can seem like such a wash during pregnancy. I mean — if you can’t get Botox, what on Earth is there to be excited about!? The great news is here at Renew, that’s totally not the case! I offer several pregnancy-safe facials, and we also carry many products that are mama and baby approved! So, let’s dive in and chat about some of my favorites…

The “Mask of Pregnancy” (aka Melasma) can be a frustrating side effect of the hormonal changes your body goes through during pregnancy. If you aren’t familiar with the term, it’s essentially a darkening of areas of skin on the face, usually around the upper lip and eyes, hence a “mask.” These areas can be as subtle as a freckling of color or as deep in pigment coloration as “café au lait.” Some women also report experiencing melasma while using different forms of hormonal contraceptives. The good news is, hormone related melasma USUALLY resolves after pregnancy or cessation of birth control use, but it can take more time than most women are willing to wait. The better news? At Renew, we have a pregnancy-safe treatment for melasma. We carry a product that helps not only speed up the process of fading these areas but also to help prevent its development altogether. Lytera 2.0 from Skin Medica is one of the most effective and innovative pigment lightening skincare products on the market.

When we’re treating discoloration of the skin, we want to focus on two things: preventing new pigment as well as treating existing pigment. Lytera 2.0 contains several key ingredients to help do these things: Phenylethyl Resorcinol, Niacinamide and Tetrapeptide-30. Phenylethyl Resorcinol helps to support melanin (pigment) balance and correct the appearance of existing discoloration. Niacinamide and Tetrapeptide-30 are helping to prevent the appearance of NEW pigment by helping to quiet the melanocytes in your skin cells. Per SkinMedica, it is best to apply all over the face, neck and chest as opposed to spot treating areas of pigment. You should apply Lytera 2.0 twice daily, and as someone who uses Lytera herself, I like to layer mine as the 2nd product in my skincare lineup. I cleanse, apply my TNS Essential, then Lytera, then the rest of my routine follows suit. Lytera can cause slight sun sensitivity, so a daily SPF is recommended. I personally LOVE Skin Medica’s Essential Defense- Tinted sunscreen.

Honorable mention goes to the ZO by Obagi- Exfoliating Polish as another pregnancy-safe product fave of mine, but you’ll have to book a facial to experience the magic of this one for yourself!

We also offer a few fabulous pregnancy-safe facial treatments that have become a “mama fave” here at Renew. The first being our “Diamond Glow” or as some of you know it, “Dermalinfusion” treatment. This treatment involves a deep but gentle exfoliation using a diamond tip and suction, while also infusing a customized serum for your pregnancy skincare needs. This is one of my favorite facials, regardless of whether you’re pregnant or not! I recommend it to everyone because in my opinion, it’s truly one of the best facials money can buy. It’s the deepest clean your skin will ever get, and you leave with an immediate glow! Maybe you’re nearing the end of your pregnancy and are more concerned with a little relaxation and just trying to be comfortable than you are worried about skincare…no worries as we have a facial that fits both of those things! Our Prenatal Facial is the ultimate relaxation experience before your baby arrives. An entire hour of quiet pampering to yourself? Yes please! It’s worth noting that I also have a completely adjustable bed in my treatment room as well as supportive pillows to make sure your body is in its most comfortable position.

As always, I am available for any skincare or treatment questions you might have and would love to help you navigate the skin changes that come along with welcoming a new baby into this wild world.

Dr. Shelley share the benefits of IV Vitamin Therapy to promote a healthy immune system.

What is

Renew Wellness & Aesthetics is proud to now offer IV Vitamin Therapy to promote a healthy immune system! IV Vitamin Therapy is a proven treatment which allows patients to take a proactive and long-term approach to wellness while accelerating healing and boosting immunity. This intravenous infusion of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and amino acids has been utilized for decades to help boost the immune system to fight off infection and treat a variety of conditions such as respiratory infections and the common cold.

What is used for?

IV Vitamin Therapy is a practical approach to deliver nutrients straight to the cells, giving them an extra boost of energy. It can be used to boost immunity, fight off cold, flu, and other viral infections, provide detoxification, improve leaky gut, enhance athletic performance, and more!

is IV Therapy used?

During therapy, you receive an iv infusion of nutrients individually prescribed to you to address your wellness needs and goals. The slow intravenous infusion allows you to receive increased concentrations of nutrients into the bloodstream, which aren’t attainable with oral or intramuscular administration. Some of these immune-boosting vitamins and nutrients include Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), B complex vitamins, Magnesium, and Glutathione. The key ingredient in boosting your immune system against viral infections is Vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic Acid. It is important during these times to understand that a preventative treatment strategy can be a great defense for your immune system. Many hospitals around the country are utilizing IV Vitamin C as an adjunct to treatment in COVID-19 patients. The following suggestions to boost your body’s defense mechanisms have been shown in recent studies to be very promising against viral exposure:

does IV Therapy work?

Prevention includes:

  • Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid): 2-4 grams (2000-4000 mg) per day
  • Vitamin C in the form of Ascorbic Acid has been shown to do two very important things as it relates to the coronavirus:
  1. It increases T-lymphocytes production. T-lymphocytes are our immune fighting warriors!
  2. It prevents “furin cleaving” of the virus into the host cell. This means that it can help prevent the virus from attaching to the human lung cells (where it replicates), thereby slowing the progression of the illness to respiratory distress.

How long does last?

The treatments themselves will typically last around an hour, but the benefits of the treatments can last up to several weeks. It is very common and SAFE for patients to get IV Nutrient therapy as often as every week. We have patients who travel a lot or who may be sick who will get treatment as frequently as every week, and we also have patients who get benefit from the treatment by having an infusion every 2-4 weeks.

Wondering what you can do from home to keep your skin healthy? Dr. Shelley shares her favorite skincare products and a few tips!

There is no question that we are all under an increased amount of stress during this time in our world. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused increased worry and stress at the utmost heightened levels. We are stressed about keeping ourselves and our loved ones safe and healthy, keeping our jobs, and how we will homeschool our kids. Those on the front lines of our healthcare system are stressed about not having enough protection to safely treat those with the virus while also protecting themselves. We are stressed about the unknown and wondering when our world will go back to “normal.”

Stress affects our bodies both emotionally and physically, so it comes as no surprise that our skin is one area where we display our stress the most. Our skin is the largest organ in our body, and it can show our stress in a number of different ways, including acne breakouts and inflammatory responses such as rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis. The interesting thing about our skin is that it can’t tell the difference between different types of stress such as physical, emotional, or environmental stress. However, we do know that the longer we endure stress, the harder the toll it takes on our skin.

How does stress affect our skin?

• Stress Triggers an Inflammatory Response
This inflammatory response starts in the digestive system and works its way to our skin. Increased amounts of stress on our bodies (whether physical or emotional) induces a “fight or flight” response within us and slows down our digestion in the gut. This slowed digestion in turn affects bacteria in the gut. It causes the “bad” bacteria in our digestive system to overproduce. This “bad” bacteria, in addition to other toxins, then leaks through the membranes of our gut and into other parts of our body, causing systemic inflammation. As a result of this internal inflammation, our skin also becomes inflamed, which induces unwanted skin conditions such as rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and even acne breakouts.

• Stress Dries Out Skin
When our bodies are under stress, we start to produce high levels of two stress hormones called adrenaline and cortisol. The activation of these hormones weakens our immune system and leads to inflammation in our bodies. These hormones also trigger our sweat glands to produce sweat, which causes us to lose water more quickly. This leads to dehydration and affects our skin’s ability to hold onto water, which then results in dry, flaky, and even red skin.

• Stress Can Make Your Skin More Oily
In addition to drying out our skin, stress can also make our skin more oily. While this might sound like a conundrum, it’s actually a scientific fact. Stress leads to this dry AND oily combination skin because as stated earlier, an increase in cortisol activates our sweat glands, also known as our sebaceous glands. This increase in sweat gland activity leads to an increased production of oil in our skin, which then leads to blockages in our pores. The dry flakiness of our stressed skin also blocks our pores, resulting in worsening acne breakouts.

How can we take care of our during times of stress?

There are a multitude of treatments and products that I recommend for stressed skin. In-office treatments such as facials, Diamond Glow hydradermabrasion, IPL, and microneedling with PRP are some of my favorites. However, in light of our current recommendations to stay home to prevent further spread of COVID-19, there are several skin care products you can use at home to see a clinical change in your skin! I cannot stress enough the importance of a solid and consistent skin care routine with physician-grade skin care products. Here are some of my favorite tips and products to keep your skin healthy and vibrant during these stressful times!

• Take a Daily Probiotic
Probiotics aren’t “skin care products” per se. However, the positive effects that probiotics can have on your skin are outstanding! Earlier, it was discussed that increased stress can lead to “leaky gut” and increased bacteria and inflammation throughout the body. Taking a probiotic one to two times daily can DECREASE the amount of bacteria in your gut, therefore DECREASING inflammation in the body and skin, leading to less acne, rosacea, and other inflammatory conditions. In addition, probiotics will help support mental health and mood as a result of the decreased inflammation! My go-to probiotic of choice (which we carry at Renew!) is:
Active Probiotic by Farmakeio

• Use a Gentle Skin Cleanser
Some of my favorite skin cleansers that we carry at Renew are:
Simply Clean by SkinCeuticals
Gentle Cleanser by ZO
Purifying Foaming Wash by SkinMedica (for acne-prone and oily skin)

• If acne-prone, use a retinol!
Retinols help clear up acne-prone skin by keeping the follicles clear so that oil does not become trapped under the skin. This prevents further acne breakouts. We carry several different retinols at Renew with varying strengths to provide the best individualized treatments for our patients. In those with sensitive skin, I recommend starting with the lowest dose retinol one to two nights per week and slowly titrating up. Some of my favorite retinols are:
Retinol 0.3 by SkinCeuticals
Retinol Complex 0.5 by SkinMedica
Retinol Skin Brightening 0.5% by ZO

• Keep your skin hydrated!
It is important to keep your skin hydrated at ALL times, but particularly during times of stress, as we know stress dehydrates our skin. My top choices for skin hydrators that WON’T clog your pores are:
Triple Lipid Restore by SkinCeuticals
Hydrating B5 Gel by SKinCeuticals
HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator by SkinMedica

• Drink plenty of water
Drinking water is another way to keep you skin (AND your body) hydrated. I recommend drinking at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day.

• Relieve your stress!
Taking care of our bodies both physically AND emotionally is paramount to helping us cope with stress and improving our overall health and wellbeing. I recommend the following healthy habits to improve your mental and physical health:

          • Get plenty of sleep! Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep per night.
          • Exercise! I recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least five days per week.
          • Meditate or pray DAILY. This will help bring a sense of peace to your overall emotional wellbeing and will in turn help you cope with stress.
